OTG_1973_07_04_c2 audio other_minds audio_music Charles Amirkhanian interviews French composer Jean-Claude Éloy in Paris, France, in June of 1972. Éloy was born in Rouen in 1938, and has studied with Darius Milhaud and Pierre Boulez, becoming one of the latter’s best known protégés in the early 1960s. Éloy discusses his recent travels, including a trip to the United States. He also talks about his interest in non-Western music, especially Asian music, and how it differs from traditional European music. Charles quizzes Éloy about how he has dealt with extending the time of vocal music in the Asian style when using performers that have trained only in Western techniques. Éloy also discusses the issues surrounding improvisation. He is of the opinion that in the West, improvisation has become to strongly associated with random anarchy rather than the structured spontaneity that is found in Indian music and other Eastern traditions.
